Top 10 Worst Tamil Films of 2012

Taking a breather from site reviewing, I’ve compiled a list of 10 worst tamil films of 2012 released until Q3 ( Jan – Sep). To stay clear I’ve omitted some movies like Anbulla Manvizhiye, Asthamanam, Thootuvan, Mye etc, because to say the truth, without Wikipedia I would have never come across those titles, I think you too would be scratching your heads to recall those titles. Leave them and lets go straight to the worst 10.

CAST : Jiiva, Pooja Hegde, Narain
                                MUSIC : K
                                DIRECTION : Myskkin
                                RELEASED ON : 31st August

Probably the first Jiiva starrer which went under massive promotions, hype and everything. But the story is too weak for a super hero fare with a shaky screenplay , stereotype portrayal of many characters also didn’t help the movie. Viewers never connected with those characters due to dodgy editing. There were two action sequences and suddenly Lee is considered the only  savior of all the peoples out there. Narain was good until climax and heroine was never there. Three good things to write home about is undoubtedly Jiiva, cinematography and music by K.

PROS:
Jiiva
Music by K
Cinematography

CONS:
Editing
Weak story
Drama inspired screenplay

                                CAST: Vinay, Sharmila, Prabhu, Santhanam
                                MUSIC: Pravin Mani
                                DIRECTION : Madhesh . R
                                RELEASED ON: 2nd August

Vinay’s first tamil release after Modhi vilayadu, that is 3 years back, he could have chosen a better script than this. The film is woven with only ray of hope- Santhanam, but it became too much of a burden for him to carry forward.  Average songs, no expectation, 20 year old story line are the things the movie came with.

PROS:
Santhanam, obviously

CONS
Dated storyline
Music

8. 3

                                CAST: Dhanush, Shruthi, Prabhu
                                MUSIC: Anirudh Ravichander
                                DIRECTION: Aishwarya Dhanush
                                RELEASED ON: 30th March

“ Why this kolaveri di?” can be seen as the exact one line review of this movie. Chartbuster songs, great casting, fine cinematography are the three pillars of the movie but it is let down greatly by Snail speed narration and a negative climax. Negative climax in the sense is not about a sad ending but conveying a wrong message to the society. In a country which is cursed with 15 suicides per hour, these type of endings should not drive further more youngsters to a mortal mind set.

PROS:
Dhanush
Music
Cinematography

CONS:
Negative climax
Déjà vu feel with Mayakkam Enna
Screenplay

                                CAST: Vimal, Nisha Agarwal, Santhanam
                                MUSIC: Thaman
                                DIRECTION: Prem Nazir
                                RELEASED ON: 25th May

Remaking telugu movies are quite fruitful in this past decade, they offer a minimum guarantee. But remaking a super flop telugu movie does not make any sense at all. Vimal as a modern youth is quite not acceptable atleast for now and Nisha Agarwal was as charmy as her bigger sister. Music was too average and the film was released all the way during the success run of Kalakalapu and it failed miserably at the box office.

PROS:
Nisha Agarwal
Santhanam

CONS:
Vimal
Music
Poor Story & narration

                                CAST: Sundar C, Sneha, Vivek
                                MUSIC: Srikanth Deva
                                DIRECTION: K. Selva Bharathi
                                RELEASED ON: 15th June

It’s the remake of 1980’s Superstar Starrer of the same title. The film has to hold the massive expectations during the shooting phase itself. But the film bombed at the box office, reason being that it doesn’t had the nativity feel of the original and the songs were mediocre. On the whole of the earth the producer cant find a better music director other than Deva Jr. who holds a 90% track record of mediocre songs.

PROS:
Story

CONS:
Music
Artificial screenplay
Poor direction

                                CAST: Johnny, Gayathri
                        MUSIC: Charles Bosco, Dinesh Kanagaratnam
                        DIRECTION: R. Paneerselvam
                        RELEASED ON: 24th August

It generated some hype prior to its release due to a new theme of a mentally affected youngster falling in love. But it failed in the box office due to poor handling of characters and story. Protagonist Johnny did a good job portraying as a mentally affected youth.

PROS:
Johnny

CONS:
Direction
Screenplay
Cinematography

                                CAST: Arjun, Archana Gupta
                                MUSIC: Dhina
                                DIRECTION: Kicha
                                RELEASED ON: 16th March

Arjun’s first direct tamil release after the wild blockbuster Mankatha. His films generally have some hype surrounded during the day of release and that would evaporate on that very evening. This film is also a prototype Arjun film, with a poor story. Arjun has to believe that he cant handle the movies successfully by himself here after. His charm is faded and his glorious days are gone. Support cast is the right direction to our first action king of tamil cinema.

PROS:
NIL
CONS:

Direction
Music
Screenplay

                                CAST: Vidharth, Sanchita Shetty
                                MUSIC: A. L. Johan
                                DIRECTION: Tamil Selvan
                                RELEASED ON: 13th January

Vidharth’s super flop in a row after Mudhal Idam. Mynaa had definitely shown the talents of this man but these kind of movies like Kollaikaran, Mudhal Idam are making everyone to lose interest to watch his films.” Veliore Kiziyae” sung by Vijay Prakash and Shreya Goshal is the only thing and other than this there is absolutely nothing good to write about the movie here.

PROS:
‘Veliore Kiziyae’ A Single Track sung by Vijay Prakash & Shreya Goshal

CONS:
Screenplay
Story
Direction

                                CAST: Ganesh, Kalpana Pundit, Shobana
                                MUSIC: Agnel Roman, Faizan Hussain
                                DIRECTION: Natty Kumar, Dr. Jay
                                RELEASED ON: 10th August

Everyone was wondering who’s this guy Ganesh after Unnai Pol Oruvan and Abiyum Naanum. Then he’s given the role of a protagonist prematurely and the result is negative criticism and poor business at the BO. But he’s not the only one to blame, direction and music are the things needed an immediate uplift in the future.

PROS:
Polished Cinematography

CONS:
Ganesh doesn’t fit as a protagonist
Awkward direction

                                CAST: Ramarajan, Kaushika, Vadivelu
                                MUSIC: Dhina
                                DIRECTION: N. T. G. Saravanan
                                RELEASED ON: 15th January

Most probably a ‘Disaster in the making’. From producer to lightman everyone knew the result of the movie from day 1 of shoot. The producer had the infinite guts to release the movie along with Nanban- a ‘Blockbuster in the making’.  Saying it has a poor story means adding a great honour to this film, No story will be the apt word. Ramarajan still has the balls to portray as a lead and the producer could surely be his proxy or ally. Power star films boasted a decent script comparing to this crap. Technically the movie is shooted in 21st century but it actually reminds us of some century old movies. Cinematography will look good when shooted with a mobile camera in contrast to Medhai’s cinematography. Probably the director & cinematographer would have come from a parallel universe to say the least. Any youngsters dreaming to be a filmmaker would suddenly quit his interest in cinemas after watching Medhai. One thing is clear, Medhai has the eligibility to be a worst movie for many more centuries to come.

PROS:
(JUST KIDDING)

CONS:
ALMOST ALL, this film is considered as a black spot for tamil cinema.
Medhai shouldn’t be even made at first, which vitally injures the image of tamil cine industry.

    1. Mugamoodi is a reguar masala fare with a Kung - fu coating, 3 never took off and it conveyed entirely a wrong message good enough to be in Worst 10. But these are purely my own views and i adore your take on Mugamoodi and 3.
      Cheers

  2. Mugamoodi and 3 were not so bad as to be here.
Maybe Mugamoodi was not that good, but definitely 3 was a watchable film.
But surprised to see Saguni missing.
